TR meets Beta Blocker and The Body Clock

Matt (drums and backing vocals) and Vinny (lead vocals and guitar) before bassist Josh joined. Dogs not in band.

In the first of a series of interviews with unsigned bands, TR speaks to Oxford-based Beta Blocker and The Body Clock (BBATBC).

As part of the unsigned band interview series, I’ll be talking to artists about whether it’s such a big deal to be signed anymore what with Soundcloud, Myspace and all these social media thingamabobs. It’s also thanks to these thingamabobs that I’ll be able to link you to their tunes.

Here’s how it went when I caught up with BBATBC:

TR: What are you up to at the moment?

Practicing for some shows we have coming up, writing lots of new songs, eating plenty of fresh fruit and we have all really been trying to stay in shape actually.

How would you describe your music style?

We can never take this question seriously if anybody asks us it we just spend ages making up funny new genres that don’t really mean anything our latest favourites; peach-fuzz, frat-pop, party-flop, tuna-house, bro-fi, so-so-fi. so you can listen to us and pick. (TR chooses bro-fi).

Tell me about your members

Well we used to just be two and we are three as of about a month ago, it’s great.

How long have you been going?

About a year and a half.

Have you been in any other bands?

Vinny and Matt have been in a couple of other bands but Josh is completely new to the whole thing, which is actually really nice.

What’s your favourite part of the process?

The writing and the performing

Is there a band whose path you’d like to follow?

Not really, if we kept going for a long time it would be nice to get old, gracefully, maybe like the Flaming Lips or Eels.

How much do use the internet?

A lot, its really important I think to use that stuff, its kind of where small bands exist and function, you don’t really have much choice.

Is it as important to get a record deal as it used to be?

No I don’t thinks it’s that important, D.I.Y is really cool at the moment which is a good thing I think because it just encourages everybody to do things, making home made tapes and their own art work and stuff is cool. But we aren’t die hard D.I.Y at all. If you love making music and can make enough money that you don’t have to work, that just means you have more time to make more music.

Have you ever changed what you do with getting signed in mind?

Don’t think so.

Have a look at their Sound Cloud for more tunes.
